Method

Preparation Instructions

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Make the Dough

Add the salt and flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  3. 3

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

  4. 4

    Shape the Pretzels

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, then twist into a pretzel shape.

  5. 5

    Prepare the Baking Soda Bath

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  6. 6

    Add Toppings and Bake

Brush the pretzels with melted butter and sprinkle coarse sea salt on top. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

  7. 7

    Cool and Serve

Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your salty pretzels warm!
