Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the long-grain rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps prevent the rice from becoming sticky.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Vegetables

Dice the onion and bell pepper, and mince the garlic. Set aside.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent. Add minced garlic and diced bell pepper, cooking for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 4

    Add Spices

Stir in the turmeric, cumin, and salt, mixing well with the sautéed vegetables. Cook for an additional minute to toast the spices.

  3. 5

    Cook the Rice

Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir to coat the grains with the oil and spices. Pour in the water and bring to a boil.

  4. 6

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.

  5. 7

    Add Peas

In the last 5 minutes of cooking, add the frozen peas to the rice without lifting the lid. This allows the peas to steam and heat through.

  6. 8

    Fluff and Serve

After the cooking time, remove the pot from the heat and let it sit covered for an additional 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve warm.
