Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and salt until well combined.

  2. 2

    Cut in Butter

Add the cold unsalted butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Form the Dough

Gradually add the cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. Do not overmix. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Filling Preparation

  1. 4

    Cook the Beef

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent.

  2. 5

    Add Ground Beef

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Season with salt and black pepper.

  3. 6

    Mix in Marinara and Cheese

Once the beef is cooked, stir in the marinara sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese. Remove from heat and let cool.

Assembly and Frying

  1. 7

    Roll Out the Dough

On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into squares of about 4x4 inches.

  2. 8

    Fill the Dough Squares

Place a tablespoon of the beef filling in the center of each square. Fold the dough over to form a triangle and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.

  3. 9

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  4. 10

    Fry the Pizza Puffs

Carefully drop the filled puffs into the hot oil, frying in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  5. 11

    Serve

Serve the pizza puffs warm with additional marinara sauce for dipping.
