Method

Cooking the Beef

  1. 1

    Prepare the Steak

In a large pot, place the flank steak and cover with water. Add salt, bay leaves, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours until the beef is tender.

  2. 2

    Shred the Beef

Once cooked, remove the beef from the pot and let it cool slightly. Shred the beef using two forks and set aside.

Sautéing the Vegetables

  1. 3

    Prepare the Vegetables

Chop the onions and bell peppers into thin strips. Mince the garlic.

  2. 4

    Cook the Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions, bell peppers, and garlic. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are softened and the onions are translucent.

Combining Ingredients

  1. 5

    Mix Everything Together

Add the shredded beef to the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Season with black pepper, cumin, and lime juice. Mix well and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes until everything is heated through and well combined.

Serving

  1. 6

    Garnish and Serve

Serve the vaca fritas hot, garnished with fresh cilantro and lime wedges on the side.
