Arepa Base

Method

Making the Arepa Base

1

Combine Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal, salt, and water. Mix well until the dough is smooth and no lumps remain.

2

Knead the Dough

Knead the dough for about 2-3 minutes until it becomes soft and pliable. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, a tablespoon at a time.

3

Form the Arepas

Divide the dough into equal portions (about the size of a golf ball). Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it into a disc about ½ inch thick.

Frying the Arepas

4

Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat until hot but not smoking.

5

Fry the Arepas

Carefully add the arepas to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown and crispy.

6

Drain Excess Oil

Once fried, remove the arepas from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Preparing the Filling

7

Choose Your Filling

Select your desired filling: shredded beef, shredded pork, or a combination of ham and cheese.

8

Heat the Filling

If necessary, warm the filling in a small pot over low heat until heated through.

9

Stuff the Arepas

Cut a slit in the side of each arepa and stuff it generously with your chosen filling.
