Method
Prepare the Arepa Dough
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal and salt.
- 2
Add Water
Gradually add the water to the dry ingredients, stirring with a spoon until fully incorporated.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Once the mixture is combined, knead the dough by hand for about 2-3 minutes until it is smooth and pliable. If too dry, add a little more water; if too wet, add a bit more cornmeal.
- 4
Shape the Arepas
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a round patty, about 1 inch thick.
Cook the Arepas
- 5
Preheat the Pan
Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a tablespoon of oil.
- 6
Cook the Arepas
Place the arepas in the skillet and cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and slightly crispy.
- 7
Bake the Arepas (Optional)
For a softer inside, transfer the arepas to a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes after pan-frying.
Prepare the Filling
- 8
Choose Your Filling
Select your preferred filling option: ham and cheese, shredded beef, or pork.
- 9
Assemble the Arepas
- 10
Cut the Arepas
Once cooked, slice the arepas in half horizontally without cutting all the way through, creating a pocket.
- 11
Fill the Arepas
Stuff each arepa with your chosen filling and any optional add-ons like avocado or salsa.
- 12
Serve
Serve the arepas warm and enjoy!
