Method
Preparing the Béchamel Sauce
- 1
- 2
Add Milk
Gradually whisk in 300ml of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to whisk until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- 3
Season the Sauce
Add 1 tsp of nutmeg, 1 tsp of salt, and black pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.
Assembling the Croque Monsieur
- 4
Prepare the Bread
Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Take 4 slices of sourdough bread and spread a layer of the béchamel sauce on each slice.
- 5
Layer the Ham and Cheese
On top of the béchamel, layer 2 slices of ham and sprinkle grated gruyère cheese generously over each. Top with another slice of sourdough bread.
- 6
Butter the Top
Spread a thin layer of butter (25g) on top of each sandwich.
- 7
Bake the Sandwiches
Place the assembled sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
Preparing the Pommes Frites
- 8
Cut the Potatoes
Peel and cut 500g of potatoes into thin sticks. Rinse them in cold water to remove excess starch, then pat them dry with a kitchen towel.
- 9
Heat the Oil
In a deep pot, heat 1 liter of vegetable oil to 180°C (350°F).
- 10
- 11
Season the Frites
Sprinkle with salt to taste while still hot.
Serving
- 12
Plate and Serve
Serve the Croque Monsieur hot with a side of pommes frites. Optionally, for a Croque Madame, top with a fried egg.
