Dough

Honey Syrup

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, milk, and egg. Mix until a smooth batter forms.

  3. 3

    Let the Dough Rise

Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Fry the Loukoumades

Using a spoon or a piping bag, drop small amounts of the risen dough into the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they are golden brown.

  3. 6

    Drain Excess Oil

Remove the fried loukoumades with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Honey Syrup Preparation

  1. 7

    Make the Syrup

In a small saucepan, combine honey and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serving

  1. 8

    Coat with Syrup

Place the warm loukoumades in a serving dish and drizzle the honey syrup over them until well coated.

  2. 9

    Garnish

Sprinkle ground cinnamon and chopped walnuts or pistachios over the loukoumades before serving.
