Calamari

Method

Preparing the Marinara Sauce

  1. 1

    Cook the Garlic

In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add the Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a simmer.

  3. 3

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in fresh basil just before serving.

Frying the Calamari

  1. 4

    Prepare the Calamari

In a bowl, mix together flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

  2. 5

    Coat the Calamari

Dredge the calamari rings in the flour mixture until fully coated.

  3. 6

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the oil to 375°F (190°C).

  4. 7

    Fry the Calamari

Fry the calamari in batches, without overcrowding, for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  5. 8

    Serve with Sauce

Serve the fried calamari hot with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
