Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Green Beans

Wash the fresh green beans thoroughly under cold water. Trim the ends of the beans and cut them into 2-inch pieces.

  2. 2

    Chop the Onion and Garlic

Peel and finely chop the onion. Peel and mince the garlic cloves.

  3. 3

    Prepare Optional Add-ins

If using bacon, chop it into small pieces. If using almonds, roughly chop them.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Cook the Bacon (Optional)

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the chopped bacon. Cook until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the bacon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.

  2. 5

    Sauté the Onion and Garlic

In the same skillet with the bacon drippings (or olive oil if not using bacon), add the chopped onion. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent, then add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

  3. 6

    Add Green Beans and Liquid

Add the prepared green beans to the skillet. Pour in the chicken broth and add salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and sugar. Stir to combine.

  4. 7

    Simmer the Green Beans

Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to low. Let the green beans simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender but still crisp.

  5. 8

    Finish and Serve

If using, stir in the cooked bacon and chopped almonds just before serving. Adjust seasoning if needed. Serve warm.
