Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Dry Rub

In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to create a dry rub.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Pork

Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. Rub the dry rub all over the pork, ensuring it is evenly coated. Allow the pork to marinate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight in the refrigerator.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Pork

Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the pork shoulder in a roasting pan or Dutch oven, cover it tightly with aluminum foil or a lid, and cook in the preheated oven for about 4-5 hours, or until the pork is fork-tender.

  2. 4

    Rest the Pork

Once cooked, remove the pork from the oven and let it rest, covered, for about 20-30 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute.

  3. 5

    Shred the Pork

Using two forks, shred the pork into bite-sized pieces. Discard any large pieces of fat.

BBQ Sauce

  1. 6

    Make the BBQ Sauce

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir and bring to a simmer. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens slightly.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve

Serve the pulled pork on a bun or plate, generously topped with the BBQ sauce.
