Method
Pasta Preparation
- 1
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the water.
- 2
Once the water is boiling, add the elbow macaroni. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.
- 3
Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.
Cheese Sauce Preparation
- 4
- 5
Once the butter is melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour to create a roux. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
- 6
Slowly add the milk while continuously whisking to prevent lumps from forming. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- 7
Once the sauce has thickened, reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
- 8
Add salt, black pepper, and mustard powder to the cheese sauce. Stir to combine.
Combining
- 9
Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is well coated with the sauce.
- 10
Serve immediately, or transfer to a baking dish and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes for a crispy top.
