Method

Crust Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Pie Crust

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Cut in the unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 2

    Form the Dough

Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Do not overwork the dough.

  3. 3

    Chill the Dough

Shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

  4. 4

    Roll Out the Dough

On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a 12-inch circle. Carefully transfer it to a 9-inch pie pan, trimming any excess dough.

  5. 5

    Pre-bake the Crust

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork and bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

Filling Preparation

  1. 6

    Prepare the Filling Mixture

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract until fully combined.

  2. 7

    Add Dry Ingredients

Sift in the flour, ground nutmeg, and ground cinnamon, and gently fold until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  3. 8

    Fill the Crust

Pour the filling mixture into the pre-baked pie crust, spreading it evenly.

  4. 9

    Bake the Pie

Bake in the preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45-50 minutes, or until the center is set and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  5. 10

    Cool and Serve

Allow the pie to cool at room temperature for at least an hour. Slice and serve, optionally topped with whipped cream.
