Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.

Melt the Butter
In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, salt, and baking powder until well combined.

Mix Together
Pour the butter mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
Baking

Add Optional Ingredients
If using, fold in the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts into the brownie batter.

Bake the Brownies
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Cool and Serve
Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Cut into squares and serve.
