Method
Flan Preparation Directions
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then stop stirring. Allow the mixture to boil until it turns a golden caramel color. Quickly pour the caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to harden.
- 2
Prepare the Custard
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
- 3
Combine and Bake
Pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the flan mold. Place the mold in a larger baking dish and fill the baking dish with hot water halfway up the sides of the flan mold. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted comes out clean.
- 4
Cool and Serve
Remove the flan from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan, invert onto a serving plate, and enjoy!
