Sauces and Garnishes

Method

Preparing Sushi Rice

1

Rinse the Rice

Place the sushi rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.

2

Cook the Rice

In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the water is absorbed.

3

Season the Rice

Once cooked, transfer the rice to a large bowl. In a separate small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Pour this mixture over the rice and gently fold to combine. Allow to cool to room temperature.

Assembling Sushi

4

Prepare the Nori

Lay a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi mat or clean surface.

5

Spread the Rice

Moisten your hands to prevent sticking and take a handful of sushi rice. Spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.

6

Add Fillings

In the center of the rice, lay slices of fresh salmon, cucumber, and avocado.

7

Roll the Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, carefully lift the edge of the mat and roll the sushi away from you. Press gently but firmly to form a tight roll.

8

Slice the Roll

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between cuts to ensure clean slices.

Serving

9

Plate the Sushi

Arrange the sushi pieces on a serving platter. Drizzle with soy sauce and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.

10

Garnish

Serve with wasabi and pickled ginger on the side for added flavor.
