Cake and Frosting

Method

Preparation and Assembly

  1. 1

    Bake the Cake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Gradually add to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  4. 4

    Incorporate Boiling Water

Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).

  5. 5

    Bake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

  6. 6

    Make the Fudge Frosting

Melt the unsweetened chocolate. In a mixing bowl, beat heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until smooth. Fold in melted chocolate.

  7. 7

    Assemble the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of fudge frosting on top, then add the second layer. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining fudge frosting.

  8. 8

    Serve

Drizzle with salted caramel sauce, sprinkle with chocolate crunch, and add dollops of whipped cream around the plate.
