Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the basmati rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Soak the Rice

Transfer the rinsed rice to a bowl, cover it with water, and let it soak for about 30 minutes. This helps to elongate the grains and improve the texture.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Prepare to Cook

After soaking, drain the rice and set it aside. In a medium saucepan, combine the soaked basmati rice, 2 cups of water, and 1 tsp of salt.

  2. 4

    Bring to a Boil

Place the saucepan on the stove over high heat and bring the mixture to a rapid boil.

  3. 5

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time as it will release steam.

  4. 6

    Fluff the Rice

After 15-20 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for another 5 minutes. Then, remove the lid and use a fork to fluff the rice gently.
