Filo Pastry

Nut Filling

Honey Syrup

Method

Preparing the Nut Filling

  1. 1

    Chop the Nuts

Finely chop the walnuts and pistachios in a food processor. Combine them in a mixing bowl.

  2. 2

    Mix the Filling

Add the sugar and ground cinnamon to the chopped nuts. Mix well until combined.

Assembling the Baklava

  1. 3

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 4

    Prepare the Filo

Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan. Lay out the filo pastry sheets and cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying.

  3. 5

    Layer the Filo

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of filo in the dish and brush with butter. Repeat this process, layering and buttering each sheet until you have about 8 sheets.

  4. 6

    Add the Nut Filling

Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the filo. Continue layering with more filo sheets, brushing each with butter, until you have used half of the filo.

  5. 7

    Finish Layering

Add the remaining nut mixture, then top with more filo sheets, brushing each with butter, until all the filo is used. Brush the top layer generously with butter.

  6. 8

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the assembled baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.

  7. 9

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

Making the Honey Syrup

  1. 10

    Combine Ingredients

In a saucepan, combine water, honey, and vanilla extract.

  2. 11

    Boil the Syrup

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

  3. 12

    Cool the Syrup

Remove from heat and allow the syrup to cool slightly.

Finishing the Baklava

  1. 13

    Pour the Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the honey syrup over the hot baklava, ensuring it seeps into the cuts.

  2. 14

    Cool and Serve

Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. Enjoy your delicious baklava!
