Method
Prepare Base & Soften
- 1
Place the rolled oats in a medium bowl. Pour 1 cup of the almond milk over the oats, stir to combine, and let sit for 5 minutes to soften slightly. This step reduces grittiness and makes the mixture easier to blend.
- 2
While the oats soften, peel and mash the ripe banana in a separate small bowl until mostly smooth. If using dates, finely chop them or soak them in 2 tablespoons warm water for 5 minutes to plump and make blending easier.
Blend Energy, Protein & Fats
- 3
Combine ingredients
Add the mashed banana, softened oats (and any date soaking water and chopped dates), honey, almond butter, Greek yogurt, whey or plant protein, chia seeds, and ground flaxseed into a blender or high-speed food processor.
- 4
Pour the remaining 2 cups of almond milk into the blender. Add the sea salt and the optional instant espresso powder, citrus zest, and cinnamon if using.
- 5
Blend on medium-high for 30–60 seconds, or until smooth and homogenous. If the mixture is too thick for your liking, add up to 0.5 cup more almond milk and pulse again until desired consistency is reached. The final texture should be pourable but slightly thick—like a milkshake or thick smoothie—so it sits well in the stomach without sloshing.
Taste, Adjust & Serve
- 6
Taste the blend and adjust sweetness or salt: add an additional 0.5–1 tbs honey for more sweetness or a pinch more sea salt if needed. If you want a cooler, faster-to-digest drink, add a few ice cubes and pulse briefly.
- 7
Pour into two 12–16 oz bottles or one large bottle for on-the-go fuel. Consume 30–60 minutes before your workout for best results. Shake well before drinking if left to sit, as chia and flax will thicken the mixture over time.
- 8
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Stir or shake before consuming; discard after 24 hours for optimal freshness and food safety.
