Sushi Rice

Sushi Fillings

Nori and Garnishes

Method

Preparing Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the sushi rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear, removing excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a rice cooker or pot, combine the rinsed rice and water. Cook according to the rice cooker instructions or bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes until the water is absorbed.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl. In a small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat gently until dissolved, then pour over the rice. Gently fold the mixture into the rice with a wooden spatula while fanning it to cool.

Preparing Sushi Rolls

  1. 4

    Prepare Fillings

Slice the fresh tuna and salmon into thin strips. Cut the cucumber and avocado into long, thin slices. Have cream cheese ready for spreading.

  2. 5

    Roll the Sushi

Place a nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands to prevent sticking and grab a handful of sushi rice. Spread it evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

  3. 6

    Add Fillings

Place slices of tuna, salmon, cucumber, avocado, and a line of cream cheese horizontally across the rice-covered nori.

  4. 7

    Roll It Up

Using the mat, carefully roll the sushi away from you, pressing gently but firmly. Keep rolling until the nori is sealed, using a bit of water to seal the edge.

  5. 8

    Slice the Rolls

With a sharp knife, slice the rolls into 6-8 pieces. Clean the knife between cuts to ensure clean slices.

Serving the Sushi Platter

  1. 9

    Arrange on Platter

Place the sliced sushi rolls on a serving platter. You can arrange them by type or color for visual appeal.

  2. 10

    Add Garnishes

Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
