Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onion

Slice the medium onion into thin rings.

  2. 2

    Season the Beef

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until well combined.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Onions

In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté them until they are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  2. 4

    Form the Patties

Divide the seasoned ground beef into two equal portions and shape them into patties.

  3. 5

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.

  4. 6

    Assemble the Patty Melt

While the patties are cooking, spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer the cooked patties with melted cheese and caramelized onions. Top with the other two slices of bread, buttered side out.

  5. 7

    Grill the Sandwiches

In the same skillet, add the assembled sandwiches and grill over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
