Method

Prepare the Pasta

  1. 1

    Cook the Macaroni

In a large pot of boiling salted water, add 2 cups of macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Make the Cheese Sauce

  1. 2

    Prepare the Roux

In the same pot, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly and slightly golden.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue cooking over medium heat, stirring frequently until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 4

    Melt the Cheese

Reduce heat to low and stir in the shredded Cheddar, Mozzarella, Gorgonzola, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until all cheeses are melted and smooth. Season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

Combine and Bake

  1. 5

    Mix Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until well combined.

  2. 6

    Prepare Topping

In a small skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add 1 cup of bread crumbs and 0.25 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Toss until the crumbs are golden brown and well coated.

  3. 7

    Bake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture to a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the toasted bread crumb mixture evenly over the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden.

Prepare French Bread

  1. 8

    Butter the Bread

While the mac and cheese is baking, spread 1 tablespoon of butter on 1 slice of French bread. Toast in a skillet or under a broiler until golden brown.

Serve

  1. 9

    Plate and Enjoy

Once baked, remove the mac and cheese from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve hot, with the buttered French bread on the side.
