Method

Prepare the Patty

  1. 1

    Form the Patties

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Divide the mixture into two equal parts and form into patties.

  2. 2

    Cook the Patties

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty to melt.

Prepare the Onions

  1. 3

    Sauté the Onions

In the same skillet, remove excess grease if necessary, and add a little butter. Slice the onion thinly and add it to the skillet. Sauté over medium heat until the onions become soft and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.

Assemble the Patty Melt

  1. 4

    Butter the Bread

Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.

  2. 5

    Build the Sandwich

On the unbuttered side of two slices of rye bread, place one patty with melted cheese, followed by the sautéed onions. Add any optional toppings such as pickles, mustard, or ketchup. Top with the other two slices of rye bread, buttered side facing out.

Cook the Patty Melt

  1. 6

    Grill the Sandwich

In the skillet, grill the sandwiches over medium heat for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.

Serve

  1. 7

    Slice and Enjoy

Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot. Enjoy your delicious patty melt!
