Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Filling Preparation

  1. 2

    Prepare the Filling

In another bowl, mix the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice until the apples are well coated. Set aside to let the flavors meld.

Assembly

  1. 3

    Assemble the Dumplings

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut the dough into squares large enough to wrap around the apple slices. Place a portion of the apple filling in the center of each square. Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges to seal.

Baking

  1. 4

    Bake the Dumplings

Place the dumplings on a greased baking sheet. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon for the topping. Brush the mixture over the dumplings. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
