Method

Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture along with olive oil. Mix until a dough begins to form.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  5. 5

    Shape the Dough

Once risen, punch down the dough and transfer it to a greased baking sheet. Stretch and shape it into a rectangle or circle, about 1 inch thick.

  6. 6

    Second Rise

Cover the shaped dough with a cloth and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

  7. 7

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  8. 8

    Add Toppings

Before baking, use your fingers to create dimples all over the surface of the dough. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt or herbs, as desired.

  9. 9

    Bake the Focaccia

Bake the focaccia in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  10. 10

    Cool and Serve

Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Cut into squares and serve warm.
