Method

Prepare the Burger Patties

  1. 1

    Form the Patties

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Divide the beef into four equal portions. Take two portions and flatten them into disks, about 1/2 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Add Cheese

Place a slice of American cheese in the center of each of the two flattened disks. Take the remaining two portions of beef and flatten them as well. Place them over the cheese-filled disks, sealing the edges tightly to prevent leakage.

Grill the Onions

  1. 3

    Prepare the Onions

Slice the medium onion into thin rings.

  2. 4

    Cook the Onions

In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.

Cook the Burgers

  1. 5

    Preheat the Grill

Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat.

  2. 6

    Grill the Patties

Add the cheese-stuffed patties to the grill. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side, then carefully flip and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

Assemble the Burgers

  1. 7

    Toast the Buns

While the burgers are cooking, spread the remaining tablespoon of butter on the cut sides of the burger buns. Toast them on the grill until golden brown.

  2. 8

    Add Toppings

Once the burgers are cooked, place them on the bottom half of the toasted buns. Top with the caramelized onions and pickles, then place the top half of the buns on.
