Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat and Prepare

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

  3. 3

    Cream Butter and Sugars

In another bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

  4. 4

    Add Eggs and Vanilla

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

  5. 5

    Combine Wet and Dry

Mix in the buttermilk until well combined, followed by the dry ingredients. Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. Fold in the chocolate chips.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Chocolate Sauce Preparation

  1. 8

    Heat Cream

In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream until just simmering.

  2. 9

    Melt Chocolate

Remove from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate and corn syrup. Stir until fully melted and smooth.

Assembly

  1. 10

    Layer the Cake

Once the cake is completely cooled, place one layer on a serving platter. Spread a layer of chocolate sauce on top, then add the second layer.

  2. 11

    Serve

Top the cake with scoops of vanilla ice cream and drizzle with more chocolate sauce before serving.
