Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Glass

Take an old-fashioned glass and place it on a flat surface.

  2. 2

    Muddle the Sugar

Add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the glass. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently press the sugar to break it down slightly.

  3. 3

    Add Bitters

Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters on top of the muddled sugar.

  4. 4

    Mix with Water

Add a few drops of water (just enough to dissolve the sugar) and mix until the sugar is dissolved.

Mixing

  1. 5

    Add Whiskey

Pour 2 ounces of whiskey into the glass over the sugar and bitters mixture.

  2. 6

    Add Ice

Fill the glass with a large ice cube or several smaller cubes, allowing the whiskey to chill.

  3. 7

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently for about 20-30 seconds to combine the flavors.

Garnishing

  1. 8

    Prepare the Orange Peel

Take a piece of orange peel and twist it over the glass to release the oils. Run the peel around the rim of the glass.

  2. 9

    Final Touch

Drop the twisted orange peel into the drink and garnish with a maraschino cherry if desired.
