Dough

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 2

    Add Egg and Water

Stir in the egg and cold water until the dough begins to come together. Avoid overworking the dough.

  3. 3

    Chill the Dough

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to relax the gluten.

Filling Preparation

  1. 4

    Cook the Meat

In a skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add diced onion and bell pepper, sautéing until soft.

  2. 5

    Add Garlic and Spices

Stir in minced garlic, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional minute.

  3. 6

    Add Ground Beef

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat and let cool.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 7

    Roll Out Dough

On a floured surface, roll out chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into 5-6 inch circles.

  2. 8

    Fill Empanadas

Place a spoonful of the beef filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold over and crimp edges to seal.

  3. 9

    Apply Egg Wash

Brush the tops of the empanadas with the beaten egg to give them a golden color.

  4. 10

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place empanadas on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
