Directions
- 1
Rinse the Rice
Measure 1 cup of white rice and place it in a fine-mesh strainer. Rinse the rice under cold running water for about 2-3 minutes, or until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents the rice from being gummy.
- 2
Prepare the Cooking Liquid
In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, 2 cups of water, and 1 teaspoon of salt. If you prefer, you can also add 1 tablespoon of butter or oil for extra flavor.
- 3
Bring to a Boil
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
- 4
Simmer the Rice
Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time as it releases steam.
- 5
Check for Doneness
After 18-20 minutes, check the rice for doneness. The water should be absorbed and the rice should be tender. If the rice is still hard and there is liquid left, cover and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- 6
Fluff and Serve
Once the rice is cooked, remove it from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes with the lid on. Then, remove the lid, fluff the rice with a fork, and serve warm.
