Method
Preparation
- 1
- 2
Cut Potatoes
Cut each potato into thin strips, about 1/4 inch thick, to achieve the desired French fry shape. Try to keep the sizes uniform for even cooking.
- 3
Soak Potatoes
Place the cut potato strips in a large bowl of cold water and soak for at least 30 minutes. This helps to remove excess starch and results in crispier fries.
Cooking
- 4
Heat Oil
In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.
- 5
Dry Potatoes
After soaking, drain the potatoes and pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to remove excess moisture.
- 6
Fry Potatoes (First Fry)
Carefully add the dried potato strips to the hot oil in small batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 4-5 minutes until they are soft but not browned. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- 7
Fry Potatoes (Second Fry)
Increase the oil temperature to 375°F (190°C). Fry the potatoes again in batches for another 2-3 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove and let drain on paper towels.
Serving
- 8
Season Fries
While the fries are still hot, season them with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Toss gently to ensure even coating.
- 9
Serve
Serve the French fries immediately while hot, with your choice of dipping sauces such as ketchup, mayonnaise, or aioli.
