Custard Base Preparation

Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Mix Eggs and Sugar
In a mixing bowl, whisk together 4 eggs and 1 cup of sugar until well combined and slightly frothy.

Strain Mixture
Strain the custard mixture through a fine sieve into another bowl to remove any lumps.
Caramel Sauce Preparation

Cook Until Golden
Stop stirring and let the mixture boil until it turns a golden amber color. Be careful not to burn it.

Pour into Baking Dish
Immediately pour the caramel into the bottom of a round baking dish, swirling to coat the bottom evenly.
Baking the Crema Volteada

Combine Mixtures
Gently pour the prepared custard mixture over the caramel in the baking dish.

Bake in Water Bath
Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan filled with hot water (about halfway up the sides of the custard dish). Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the custard is set.

Cool and Chill
Remove from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Serving

Invert and Serve
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the custard. Place a serving plate on top of the baking dish and invert it. The caramel will flow over the custard.
