Breadsticks

Tomato Sauce

Method

Breadsticks

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let sit for about 5-10 minutes, until foamy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, garlic powder, and dried Italian herbs.

  3. 3

    Combine Mixtures

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the foamy yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir with a wooden spoon until a dough begins to form.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  6. 6

    Shape the Breadsticks

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long stick, about 8 inches long.

  7. 7

    Second Rise

Place the shaped breadsticks on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 20-30 minutes.

  8. 8

    Bake

Brush the tops of the breadsticks with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.

Tomato Sauce

  1. 9

    Sauté Garlic

In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes, until fragrant but not browned.

  2. 10

    Add Tomatoes

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, stirring to combine with the garlic.

  3. 11

    Season the Sauce

Add dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir well and bring the sauce to a simmer.

  4. 12

    Simmer

Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow flavors to meld.

  5. 13

    Adjust Seasoning

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.
