Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the vegetable oil and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix with your hands or a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for about 20 minutes.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Roll out the Dough

Divide the rested dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.

  3. 6

    Fry the Sopapillas

Carefully place the rolled dough into the hot oil. Fry until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve Warm

Serve the sopapillas warm, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar to taste.
