Prepare the Glass
Take an old fashioned glass and chill it by filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.

Mix the Ingredients
In a mixing glass, combine the bourbon or rye whiskey, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters.

Add Ice
Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir gently for about 15-20 seconds until well chilled.

Prepare the Glass Again
Empty the ice water from the old fashioned glass and strain the cocktail mixture into the glass over a large ice cube.

Garnish
Twist the strip of orange peel over the drink to release its oils, then drop it into the glass. Add the maraschino cherry on top as a garnish.
