Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Caramelizing the Onions

In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.

  2. 2

    Adding Garlic and Deglazing

Add the minced garlic to the pot and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Then, pour in the white wine to deglaze the pot, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Allow the wine to reduce by half.

  3. 3

    Simmering the Broth

Add the beef broth, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.

  4. 4

    Preparing the Bread

While the soup simmers, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the French baguette into thick slices and place them on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven for about 10 minutes or until golden.

  5. 5

    Serving the Soup

Remove the bay leaf from the soup. Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls, place a slice of toasted baguette on top, and sprinkle generously with shredded Gruyère cheese. Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil in the oven until the cheese is bubbly and golden, about 3-5 minutes.

  6. 6

    Garnishing and Enjoying

Carefully remove the bowls from the oven, let them cool slightly, and serve hot. Enjoy your homemade French onion soup!
