Cocktail
Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a martini/coupe glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while preparing the cocktail to chill it.
Prepare espresso
Brew a fresh single shot (about 1 oz) of espresso and let it sit for 20–30 seconds to slightly cool but remain warm. If you prefer a fully cold cocktail, brew earlier and chill the espresso in the fridge or use a cold-brew concentrate (adjust intensity to about 1 oz).
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 6 ice pieces, 2 oz Ketel One vodka, 1 oz Mr Black coffee liqueur, 1 oz freshly brewed espresso, and 0.25 oz simple syrup.
Dry and wet shake (texture and foam)
First, perform a dry shake: close the shaker and shake vigorously for 8–10 seconds without ice to help emulsify and create a foam. Then open, add the ice, and shake hard for an additional 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold (this chills and dilutes the drink properly).
Strain
Dump the ice from your chilled glass if you used ice water. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini/coupe glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to capture small ice shards and achieve a smooth velvety foam on top.
Garnish and serve
Place 3 coffee beans evenly spaced on the foam as a classic garnish. Serve immediately.
