Garnish / Glass Prep

1

Prepare the rim

Pour the Tajín (and optional salt) onto a small plate and mix evenly. Run the lime wedge around the outer rim of a rocks or coupe glass to moisten it. Dip the glass rim into the Tajín mixture, twisting to coat evenly. Set glass aside to dry briefly while you mix the cocktail.

2

If serving on the rocks, fill the prepared glass with fresh ice. If serving up, leave the glass empty.

3

Juice and measure

If not using pre-pressed blood orange juice, juice 1–2 blood oranges until you have about 2 oz (about 1 medium blood orange). Measure all liquid ingredients: mezcal, orange liqueur, blood orange juice, fresh lime juice, and agave.

4

Combine and shake

Add mezcal (2 oz), orange liqueur (0.75 oz), blood orange juice (2 oz), fresh lime juice (0.5 oz) and agave nectar (0.5 oz) into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Secure lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and slightly frosted.

5

Fine strain

Using a Hawthorne strainer and, if available, a fine mesh strainer, double-strain the cocktail into the prepared glass (over fresh ice if serving on the rocks, or neat if serving up). Double-straining removes pulp and small ice shards and yields a smoother drink.

6

Garnish and finish

Garnish with a blood orange wheel or wedge on the rim or floated on top. Optionally squeeze the garnish once over the drink to add a touch more aroma. Serve immediately.
