Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Whisk together until well combined.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the vegetable oil and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix with your hands or a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Rest the Dough

Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.

Frying

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).

  2. 6

    Roll Out the Dough

Divide the rested dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Roll each ball out on a floured surface into circles about 1/4 inch thick.

  3. 7

    Fry the Sopapillas

Carefully place the rolled-out dough into the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they puff up and turn golden brown.

  4. 8

    Drain Excess Oil

Remove the sopapillas from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve Warm

Serve the sopapillas warm, drizzled with honey or sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, according to your preference.
