Serving Ingredients
Method
Sopapilla Dough Preparation
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until evenly mixed.
- 2
Add Wet Ingredients
Add the vegetable oil and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix with your hands or a wooden spoon until a dough forms.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- 4
Rest the Dough
Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes at room temperature.
Frying the Sopapillas
- 5
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat enough vegetable oil to submerge the sopapillas (about 2-3 inches deep) over medium-high heat until hot.
- 6
Roll and Cut the Dough
After resting, roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into squares or triangles.
- 7
Fry the Sopapillas
Carefully drop the dough pieces into the hot oil. Fry until they puff up and turn golden brown, approximately 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Prepare Whipped Cinnamon Cream
- 8
Whip the Cream
In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and ground cinnamon. Whip with a hand mixer or stand mixer until soft peaks form.
Assemble and Serve
- 9
Plate the Sopapillas
Place the fried sopapillas on serving plates. Add a scoop of ice cream on top of each.
- 10
Drizzle Honey
Drizzle honey over the sopapillas and ice cream to taste.
- 11
Top with Cinnamon Cream
Finish by dolloping the whipped cinnamon cream over the top and sprinkle with granulated sugar if desired.
