Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and turns a golden brown color. Be careful not to burn it.

  2. 2

    Coat the Pan

Quickly pour the caramel into a round flan mold or a Bundt pan, tilting the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to let the caramel harden.

Custard Preparation

  1. 3

    Mix the Custard

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined and smooth.

  2. 4

    Pour into the Mold

Pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the prepared mold.

Baking

  1. 5

    Prepare the Water Bath

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold into a larger baking dish and fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.

  2. 6

    Bake the Flan

Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

  3. 7

    Cool Down

Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool in the water bath for about 10-15 minutes. Then, remove the flan mold from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature.

  4. 8

    Chill the Flan

Cover the flan with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.

Serving

  1. 9

    Unmold and Serve

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it from the mold. Invert onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to flow over the custard. Slice and enjoy!
