Main Ingredients

Marinara Sauce

Method

Preparation of Mozzarella Moons

  1. 1

    Slice the Mozzarella

Cut the mozzarella cheese into thick slices, approximately 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) thick.

  2. 2

    Set up the Breading Station

In three separate shallow bowls, place the all-purpose flour in the first bowl, beat the eggs in the second bowl, and place the breadcrumbs mixed with salt and black pepper in the third bowl.

  3. 3

    Bread the Mozzarella

Dredge each mozzarella slice in flour, shaking off the excess. Dip it into the beaten eggs, and then coat it thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture.

  4. 4

    Chill the Breaded Cheese

Place the breaded mozzarella slices on a baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to help the coating stick during frying.

Cooking the Mozzarella Moons

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Fry the Breaded Mozzarella

Carefully place the chilled, breaded mozzarella slices into the hot oil, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.

  3. 7

    Drain and Serve

Once golden, remove the mozzarella moons from the oil and drain them on paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Preparation of Marinara Sauce

  1. 8

    Sauté the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic cloves and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 9

    Add Tomatoes and Season

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir to combine.

  3. 10

    Simmer the Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.

  4. 11

    Finish with Basil

Tear the fresh basil leaves and stir them into the sauce just before serving.
