Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Add the yogurt, olive oil, and yeast mixture to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Cooking the Naan

  1. 6

    Preheat the Cooking Surface

Preheat a cast-iron skillet or tandoor over medium-high heat.

  2. 7

    Shape the Naan

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it with a rolling pin into an oval shape.

  3. 8

    Cook the Naan

Place the rolled naan onto the skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface, then flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until cooked through and slightly charred.

  4. 9

    Add Toppings

If desired, brush the hot naan with melted butter and sprinkle with minced garlic and chopped cilantro.

  5. 10

    Serve

Serve warm as a side dish with your favorite curry or enjoy on its own.
