Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Lentils

In a fine mesh sieve, rinse the split yellow lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove any dust or impurities.

  2. 2

    Chop Vegetables

Chop the tomato into small pieces, mince the ginger and garlic, and chop the cilantro. Set aside.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook Lentils

In a large pot, combine the rinsed lentils and 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are soft.

  2. 4

    Sauté Spices

In a separate pan, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them pop. Add the minced ginger and garlic, and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 5

    Add Vegetables and Spices

To the sautéed spices, add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, curry leaves, and a pinch of salt. Cook for another 5 minutes until the tomatoes are soft.

  4. 6

    Combine and Simmer

Once the lentils are cooked, add the sautéed mixture to the pot of lentils. Stir well and simmer for an additional 10 minutes. Adjust the consistency of the soup with more water if needed.

Serving

  1. 7

    Season and Garnish

Taste the soup and adjust seasoning with salt and black pepper as desired. Stir in the chopped cilantro just before serving.

  2. 8

    Serve Hot

Ladle the daal soup into bowls and serve hot, optionally with rice or bread.
