Pasta

Cheese Sauce

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Pasta

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain the pasta and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 2

    Make the Roux

In the same pot, melt 0.5 cups of butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in 0.5 cups of all-purpose flour. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly until the mixture is bubbly and golden.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 4 cups of milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 4

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Reduce heat to low and stir in 4 cups of shredded cheddar cheese. Mix until melted and smooth. Add 1 tsp of salt, 0.5 tsp of black pepper, and 0.5 tsp of paprika. Stir well to combine.

Combining

  1. 5

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained elbow macaroni to the cheese sauce. Stir gently until the pasta is well coated with the sauce.

Optional Topping

  1. 6

    Prepare Breadcrumb Topping

In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of breadcrumbs, 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, and 0.25 cups of melted butter. Mix well.

  2. 7

    Bake

Transfer the mac and cheese to a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
