Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook Macaroni

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain and Set Aside

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for the macaroni, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Make Roux

Add the all-purpose flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Reduce heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and mustard powder. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining and Serving

  1. 8

    Combine Macaroni and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until well coated.

  2. 9

    Prepare Topping (if using)

If you want a crunchy topping, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and mix breadcrumbs with grated parmesan cheese.

  3. 10

    Bake (optional)

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top, and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

  4. 11

    Serve

Serve warm and enjoy your creamy mac & cheese!
