Toppings (optional)

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Water

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil. Add 1 tsp of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook the Elbow Macaroni

Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni to the boiling water. Stir occasionally and cook for 8-10 minutes until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt the Butter

In a medium saucepan, melt 4 tbs of butter over medium heat.

  2. 4

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, whisk in 1 tbs of all-purpose flour until smooth.

  3. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 6

    Add Cheese and Seasoning

Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 tsp of salt, 1 tsp of black pepper, 1 tsp of garlic powder, and 1 tsp of mustard powder until smooth.

Combining and Serving

  1. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni and the cheese sauce. Mix well to ensure the pasta is fully coated.

  2. 8

    Prepare the Topping (optional)

If using, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs with 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese in a bowl.

  3. 9

    Bake (optional)

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, top with breadcrumb mixture, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes until golden brown.

  4. 10

    Serve

Serve hot, garnished with additional cheese or herbs if desired.
