Method
Prepare the Rice
- 1
Cook the Sushi Rice
Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the package instructions, typically using a rice cooker or on the stovetop with the correct water ratio.
- 2
Season the Rice
In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and sesame oil. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the seasoning mixture. Let it cool slightly.
Prepare the Spam
- 3
Slice the Spam
Open the can of Spam and slice it into about 8 even pieces.
- 4
Fry the Spam
In a skillet over medium heat, fry the Spam slices until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides (about 2-3 minutes per side). Remove from heat.
Assemble the Musubi
- 5
Prepare the Nori
Cut each nori sheet in half so you have 8 pieces. Place a piece of nori shiny side down on a clean surface.
- 6
Layer the Ingredients
Wet your hands to prevent sticking. Take about 1/4 cup of seasoned sushi rice and press it into a rectangular shape in the center of the nori. Place a slice of fried Spam on top of the rice.
- 7
Wrap the Musubi
Fold the sides of the nori over the rice and Spam, then roll it tightly from the bottom up to form a compact rectangle. If desired, you can use a little water to help seal the edges.
- 8
Repeat
Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients until all Spam and rice are used.
Serve
- 9
Slice and Serve
Once assembled, you can slice the musubi into bite-sized pieces or serve whole. Optionally sprinkle with furikake before serving for added flavor.
