Method

Batter Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Whisk together until evenly mixed.

  2. 2

    Add Water

Gradually add cold water to the dry ingredients while whisking continuously until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onion rings.

Onion Preparation

  1. 3

    Slice the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings and set them aside in a bowl.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, making sure it is fully coated. Allow excess batter to drip off before placing it in the hot oil.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings in the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry in batches for about 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
